Diet for Indigestion
Indigestion is also known as dyspepsia or a stomach upset. In most cases indigestion results in a burning painful feeling in the upper abdominal area of the affected individual which may or may not be accompanies by abdominal bloating, nausea, vomiting or belching. The common causes of indigestion that are observed are a disease of the digestive tract or an ulcer or simply from eating too much or too fast. Additionally even the consumption of alcohol, ongoing stress or certain medications is known to irritate the lining of the stomach and cause indigestion. Those who are prone to frequent indigestion should follow a diet for indigestion which should not include junk foods, fried or grilled foods, badly prepared foods or processed foods. Similarly oily and fatty foods are also common indigestion foods as they force the digestive tract to secret more digestive juices to digest these foods. Good food for indigestion should include fresh vegetable and fruits, especially those that are high in fiber content. However, care should be taken to avoid citrus or acidic fruits as they may irritate the stomach and further aggravate the indigestion in an individual. Meats like pork and beef have zero fiber content and take very long to digest thereby causing indigestion. Hence those prone to indigestion should reduce their intake of such meats.
Besides concentrating on just foods to avoid digestion, one should also try and change ones eating habits by making a conscious effort to chew the food slowly and eat small bites. Similarly food should be eaten when one is really hungry and not just at fixed meal times. The person should try and keep themselves free from stress and take time off to relax in order to avoid indigestion. High fiber foods are an essential part of a diet for indigestion as they provide roughage and ensure that the food in the digestive tract keeps moving and there is no clogging or blockage. Yogurt is also a good food to control and prevent acidity as it is rich in acidophilus bacteria, calcium and protein thereby making it digestion friendly. Those suffering from chronic indigestion should also get a medical opinion as indigestion may just be a symptom of an underlying medical condition that may require immediate attention. The digestive system and process of an individual can also be given a boost by regular exercising especially between meals. One should also try and maintain a journal to check if there is any pattern wherein the indigestion is experienced mostly after the consumption of certain foods. These foods can then be eliminated or reduced in the person’s diet.
